Chapter Twenty-Two

Jake

December 28th

This time, I have to be right. As I stand outside the building that clearly belongs to a group of students, my heart pounds with nerves. This morning, it felt like we had all kinds of options available, many paths to go down in the search for Dennis’s murderer. I was weirdly on top of the world, feeling like this was going to be solved once and for all. But this really is the last stop for me. It has to be these people. Things like this happen, don’t they? Sure, it isn’t a common thing, not something that is seen in everyday life, it’s more of a TV show than reality, but it happens. And I it has happened here.

Dennis got involved with something that his friends were doing, computer hacking, stealing bits of money here and there, breaking into company software, and demanding money as ransom, without really thinking of the consequences. He slid down this path without thinking where it might lead him.

Dennis might have had an older wealthy woman in love with him and willing to give him everything, but like she said, he wanted to do things his own way, he wanted to look after Ella by himself. When people get desperate, things happen. They make stupid mistakes and bad judgments, which can lead to criminal activity. I wouldn’t blame Dennis if he got involved with this. I’m sure an easy road to slip down, I suppose that Ella might not be happy, but at least she will have her answer. It’s here, the answer, I am sure of it.

I knock on the door, trying to ignore how weird I feel inside, mostly because I am so connected to this, I wait for someone to open the door. If no one is in, I will scream.

Soon, a young guy does. Someone who I imagine is about eighteen or nineteen years old and must be a student. He has that smart look about him, and I suppose, the appearance of someone who could find it easy to manipulate a desperate man… not that I fully know what that looks like. But someone dragged Dennis into this.

Or maybe I am about to find out Dennis wasn’t innocent, and he was the one who started all of this, either way, as long as I know what’s happening, I’m okay because I will be on the right path.

“Police?” the guy asks dumbly. “What are you doing here?”

“Does Brock Charles or Michael Punt live here?” he nods instead of answering me out loud. “I need to speak to them.”

“Right sure,” he grumbles back without giving me more. “Come on in, and I will get Brock.”

From that, I have to assume that he is Michael. He hasn’t exactly said as much, but it’s obvious.

I walk into the house and take a seat on the couch while I wait. My eyes glance around the room and I look at the mess, wondering if there are any clues in all of that.
